2006 -2007 New (Old) Digs for the AAABA

The AAABA Tournament (1944-2006) has survived for over sixty years because of the continued hard work and support of two very special and diverse groups. The Old Timers Association for fund raising and obtaining business sponsorship every year which makes these games possible, and from our local hometown baseball fans, whose enthusiastic support has turned these games into a favorite summer tradition. People who have never been to a sandlot or an amateur baseball game all summer long purchase a ticket in August and travel to the Point Stadium in downtown Johnstown on AAABA tournament nights. They came when their parents brought them when they were just children, and now, they are bringing their children and grandchildren. They come not just to see these playoff tournaments, but to pass on a tradition which began as a dream and later became a commitment to support amateur baseball league competition. (More about the AAABA and it's origins)

Point Stadium in June of 2006

Somewhere back there is home plate in early June. The many contractors such as (Berkabile Bros., Inc.) are hard at work to complete the stadium for the 2006 AAABA tournament games. But AAABA Board members are optimistic and planning ahead for opening day and subsequent games to be played at the stadium. The stadium was basically demolished and has been rebuilt from the ground up and it will  be completely refurbished when all of the construction is completed sometime in the near future. For the 2006 season new bleachers will be installed on the first and third base sides of the field and a new concrete area for seating and a plaza behind home plate. A new press box along with completely replacing the steel under structure of the river front view. All of the electrical panels have been tested and the lights realigned to conform with the new stadium size. A relatively mild winter has allowed the contractors to work relatively unimpeded by heavy snows or bitter cold winds which is typical for Johnstown. The construction is part of an $11 million renovation project for the aging outdated 80 year old stadium, while it will not be completed this year it has progressed very quickly. Some parts of the project like the locker room construction will be completed later. The stadium grounds are scheduled to be reseeded and sod installed in mid July giving the turf adequate time to take hold for the opening day games in August 2006 and next year in  2007 the stadium will have artificial turf.
